1. Kelly Lee Owens - Inner Song Smalltown Supersound
In a year of fine ambient work from artists like Emily A. Sprague, Sarah Devachi and (further down this list) Beatrice Dillon and Nicolas Jaar, it was the artist who took the notion of "sound healing" back to the (virtual/imagined) club who made the most hypnotic, meaningful, and indeed curative record of the year. Like so much work that was conceptualized pre-pandemic but consumed under quarantine, it feels startlingly predictive of the emotions and needs of the isolated and traumatized. "Re-Wild" makes a call for a kind of feral creativity as a response to despair, and "Jeannette" offers a matter-of-fact approach to grief. But this is not a morose album in any sense; the insistent beats and soaring melodies make it a gratifying catharsis.
2. Run the Jewels - RTJ4 Jewel Runners
Another album aligned all too well with this traumatic year, the most urgent and necessary—and cacophonous—hip hop production since Public Enemy.
3. Yves Tumor - Heaven to a Tortured Mind Warp
Veering guitar-ward from his electronica-infused 2018 album Safe in the Hands of Love (also #3 on my list that year), Heaven seems to place Tumor at an almost Bowie-like position: a kind of post-human rock star whose sheer charisma steers a raucous band into howling ecstasy.
4. DJ Python - Mas Amable Incensio
Say what you will about 2020, but at least this year we learned that hazy reggaeton ÷ spacey drum 'n' bass = upside-down Boards of Canada ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
5. The Soft Pink Truth - Shall We Go On Sinning So That Grace May Increase? Thrill Jockey
The defiantly experimental Drew Daniel pulls off his wiliest surprise yet: an album of warm, atmospheric house and heartfelt, almost reverent ambient loops, all in service of an inspiring message of hope.
6. Ant LaRock - BK Brobot
Despite the absence of clubs, the cutting edges of house music bubbled with incredible creativity in 2020, albeit almost entirely in single form (see my singles list below). Here's the exception: an atmospheric and vivid album-length tribute to Brooklyn, like a deep house version of David Holmes' Let's Get Killed.
7. Sault - Untitled (Black Is)/Untitled (Rise) Forever Living Originals
Two albums, released three months apart, whose loose (and, sure, sometimes ragged) sprawl is part of the appeal, since the goals—gathering up whole histories of funk, gospel and soul in service of a moment of unimaginable Black grief, trauma, and hope—are so profound, and so necessary.
8. Tame Impala - The Slow Rush Modular
After three stunning albums from Kevin Parker's psychedelic project, each more groundbreaking, energetic, and electronica-tinged than the last, The Slow Rush's chilled disco and slow jams can at first seem like a step back, or at least a bit of a lie-down. But further listens reveal a layered richness to the mellow vibe, and a profound meditation on time and its imperceptible yet all-too-quick passage.
9. Fontaines D.C. - A Hero's Death Partisan
Echoing the spacey expanse of Can, the wry humor of Gang of Four, and the stark outlook of Daydream Nation-era Sonic Youth, Fontaines D.C. stands on the shoulders of giants. But the Dublin combo's second album feels urgent and necessary, a deeply personal ode to the struggles of contemporary life.
10. Beatrice Dillon - Workaround PAN
Is 150 bpm the "tempo of the year"? As in some of DJ Python's slippery tracks (see above), 150 bpm can read either as hyperspeed or as a loping half-speed 75 bpm, strangely perfect for a year that felt both jittery and exhausting. All of Workaround is set at this tempo, and the rigid yet perspective-tricking framework gives the constantly surprising cornucopia of sonic elements a coherent structure, a stark grid on which a museum's worth of tones hang.

1. India Jordan - "For You" Local Action
There were a lot of songs this year that made me ache to hear them out, whether in the thumping coccoon of a subterranean club, or amongst 20,000 close friends at a raucous festival. But no track made me yearn more for that experience—or exemplified its joys—than "For You." Essentially a (not even really in key) mashup, the track multiplies two euphoric samples into an irresistible blast of joy, as well as a profound statement of self-acceptance.
2. Ela Minus - "Dominique" Domino
Okay, this is another on the long list of "Things Made Pre Pandemic That Sure Seem Prophetic Now," but it's a pretty great one, making explicit how it turns out the enforced isolation of lockdown is a lot like plain old depression. We're all going to need so much therapy when this is over.
3. Tame Impala - "Lost In Yesterday" Modular
The subtle yet soaring highlight of Kevin Parker's "mellow album," its hypnotic (and perhaps wryly retro?) triple-time groove perfectly embodies the exhortation to live without regrets. Plus a real hoot of a video.
4. Bad Bunny - "Safaera" Rimas
Again, perhaps it's the Year Without a Club making me cling to anything that reminded me of a DJ set. But there's something so audacious about this three (or more?)-songs-in-one trickery, and every single bar is blazing reggaeton fire.
5. Jayda G - "Both of Us" Ninja Tune
First, we have the best piano line of the year: four bars, two chords, immediately thrilling and sultry. Then, the most heartbroken line of the year: "I can love enough/for the both of us." Oof. And then, the most effective tempo slowdown since Lil Louis, but instead of the purely carnal effect of the tempo slide in "French Kiss," here the deceleration aches with unrequited desire.
Kudos to the other Megan the Stallion track this year, but despite WAP's meme-able raunch, it wasn't really that interesting, sonically or otherwise. The real excitement was Megan's other collab; its oddball chords never seem to resolve the track's perfectly balanced tension, and the vocal deliveries walk a high-wire of hyperprecision and blasé confidence.
7. Overmono - "Everything U Need" XL
One of the most exciting new acts out there, Overmono had a couple great tracks this year, but "Everything U Need" is minimalist perfection. In six minutes, woozily detuned lead tones give way to subtle pads and jittery vocal glitches, and that's kind of it. I mean, its kick drum is barely even there, but it packs a greater punch than any booshy EDM.
8. The Avalanches feat ft. Jamie xx, Neneh Cherry, CLYPSO - "Wherever You Go" Merge
Here's another multiple-songs-in-one variations-on-a-theme type track, with at least three "acts" in its six minutes. Chalk it up to the Avalanches' mystical sample-wielding alchemy that all the cheesy "one love" elements here somehow come together into something truly inspiring.
9. Kelly Lee Owens - "Melt!" Smalltown Supersound
The stomping centerpiece of Inner Song, "Melt!" famously layers actual audio of glacial meltwater on top of its classic techno squiggles. Global warming: you're dancing to it.
10. Thundercat - "Dragonball Durag" Brainfeeder
Tell me, am I doing it right?
11. Muzi - "Don't Let Me Go" (WE.THE.BUNDU)
12. Logic1000 - "Perfume" (Therapy)
